Software Quality Assurance (SQA)

Wipro’s test diagnosis model improves testing process

The idea
Benchmarking testing processes against the proprietary Wipro STDM (software test diagnosis model) and designing & implementing an enterprise wide testing strategy to improve the release quality and environment/tools utilization.

The client

The client is one of the leading Retail chain in USA with revenues exceeding US$ 48 Billion in the fiscal year 2004.

The business challenge
The client had some testing processes and had certain pockets of excellence. However, the client faced challenges in the adoption of newer technologies for closer alignment & responsiveness to business needs. There was a lack of sufficient information on the process maturity and utilization of the environments for decision making. The importance of involving the QA teams in early development phases was ignored.

The solution
The Wipro consultants conducted a comprehensive due-diligence of existing testing activities using client's proprietary tool and Wipro's software testing diagnosis model (STDM) to get three fold perspectives on process, people and technology. The Wipro consultants identified some pockets of excellence that were not replicated or shared across projects. The Wipro consultants identified a large potential for automation of testing processes and articulated untapped benefits.

Business benefits
The senior management now has a clear picture of their testing processes
Replication of pockets of excellence within individual groups is now possible across their enterprise
Dedicated QA/testing function has gained the importance and the focus now for the delivery and support groups is on solution definition than verification
The new processes can give a potential reduction of 50 - 60% in defect reduction costs
